What a domain name?
A domain name helps us reach an IP address. A domain name helps you to reach a website without knowing the IP address.
How many kinds of domain names are there? The main top level domain names are .com for companies, .net fot network , .org for organizations .edu for schools or colleges & .gov for government websites.
In India you will also find domain names ending in .com, .co.in, .in as well. It is important that you choose a good domain name for your website.

How to Work ?
Domain names were created to make IP, or Internet Protocol, addresses more human-friendly. An IP address is a unique set of numbers that is assigned to every computer on the Internet.
Think of IP addresses like street addresses — they identify where a computer is located on the Internet and help route information so that it can easily travel between computers. But IP addresses, like this one, don’t exactly roll of your tongue, do they? And then just imagine having to memorize such a string of seemingly random numbers for every single website you wanted to find on the Internet.
If only there was an easier way — actually, there is. While computers require IP addresses to locate one another, we humans can use domain names.
The Domain Name System, or DNS, takes domain names, the kind of web addresses that people understand like goddaddy.com and translates them into IP addresses that computers need to communicate.
So instead of having to remember 18.104.22.168, you can simply remember godaddy.com. Much easier, right?
When visitors enter your domain name into a Web browser, the browser uses your Domain Name to find the correct IP address and, in turn, passes back the website associated with that IP address.
Think of this way; your domain name functions like the contacts you store in your mobile phone.
When you touch the name of a contact that’s stored in your mobile phone, your mobile phone automatically dials the number you’ve saved for that contact.
You don’t need to know where the person you’re calling is located, and you don’t need to even enter their specific phone number.
All you do is touch the contact and mobile phone does the rest.
Remember, domain names provide you with a simple, human-friendly way to locate websites on the Internet.
DNS Server Works ?
In the world of networking, humans identify names instead of numbers. So to bridge the communication gap between computers and humans and make communication a lot easier, networking engineers developed DNS, and DNS stands for a domain name system. And DNS resolves names for numbers, to be more specific it resolves domain names to IP addresses.
So if you type in a web address in your web browser, DNS will resolve the name number because only the computer knows the number. So for example if you want to visit a certain website, you will open your webbrowser and type in the domain name of that website, so for example let’s use yahoo.com.
Now technically you don’t really need to type Yahoo web page. You can type in an IP address instead, if you already know what an IP address is, but since we are not tomorrowsing and dealing with numbers, especially when there are millions of websites on the Internet. , Then we can type in the domain name instead and let DNS convert it to an IP address for us.
So for our example,
when you type the DNS server in your web browser through its database to find a mail IP address for your domain name, and when it searches, it shows that domain.
The web site will resolve the name to Yahoo’s IP address, and once which is then done, your computer is able to communicate with the Yahoo webserver and retrieve the webpage.
So DNS basically works like a phone book, when you want to find a number, you don’t look at the number first, you look at the name, then it will give you the number. So check the steps taken by DNS to take it further. So when you type in yahoo.com in your web browser and if your web browser or operating system cannot find the IP address in its cache memory, it will send the query to the next level called the resolver server.
The resolver server is basically your ISP or Internet service provider, so when the resolver receives the query, it will check its cache memory to find an IP address for yahoo.com, and if it doesn’t cancel it This will send the query to the next one. The level that is the root server. The root server header or root off is a DNS hierarchy.
There are 13 sets of these root servers and they arestrategically deployed worldwide, and they are operated by 12 variants and each set of these root servers has its own unique IP address.
When the root server receives a query for the IP address yahoo.com, the root server does not know what the IP address is, but the root server knows where to send the resolver to help find the IP address. The resolver from the root server will be directed to the TLD or top level. For domain com .com domain.
So the resolver will now ask the TLD server for yahoo.com for the IP address. Top level domain servers store there address information for top level domains, such as .com, .net, .org and and so. This particular TLD server manages the dotcom domain in addition to yahoo.com.
So when a TLD server receives an IP address query for yahoo.com, the TLD server is not going to know the IP address for yahoo.com.
The TLD will then direct the resolver to the current and final levels, which are the official name servers. So once again the resolver will ask the official name server for the IP address of yahoo.com.
The official name server or server is responsible for knowing everything about the domain that includes IP address. They are the last authority.
So when the query server does the official name resolver, the name server will respond with IP address for yahoo.com. And finally the resolver will tell your computer the IP address for yahoo.com and then your computer can now retrieve the yahoo webpage.
It is important to note that once the thesaurus acquires an IP address, it will store it in its cache memory in case of another query for yahoo.com so that it does not have to go through all the these steps again.
Domain Name Renewal
When you register your domain, you decide how long you want to maintain the registration anywhere from one to ten years. When that times is up, you can pay a renewal fee to retain your registration, or let your domain name expire.
When a domain expires, it’s released to the public where someone else may potentially register it as theirs.
That’s right… that clever, unique domain name you carefully selected and registered… that domain name that no one else in the world has… can be released for reuse by the public if you fail to renew your registration.
The best way to ensure your domain name stays yours, is establishing auto-renewal. During the registration process, your domain is setup to automatically renew upon expiration unless you explicitly opt out.
With auto renew enabled, upon expiration, Go Daddy can automatically renew your domain name, and charge the payment option you have on file with us. Thought it’s a good idea to always keep your account and billing information current, we know that credit cards do expire or you just might forget.
If our initial billing attempt fails, GoDaddy will send multiple notifications before your domain expires. Keep in mind, if you don’t turn on auto renew, it’s your responsibility to manually renew your domain prior to expiration. Simply put… auto renew is the best way to ensure that you never risk losing your domain.
To make sure you have auto renew turned on for your domain name , click Manage in the Domains section . If you don’t have auto renew turned on, this setting in the upper left corner will be set to OFF . To turn auto renew on, just click the switch.
